Emily Haswell
Welcome to With Emily Music Studio, a vibrant music studio in the heart of Portland, Oregon, founded by Emily Keimi Sadako Haswell—a professional, award-winning classical singer, educator, and composer with a degree in classical voice performance. Emily has been earning her income solely from gig work for over a decade, showcasing her versatility and dedication to the craft.
Since moving to Portland in 2016, Emily has collaborated creatively with over fifty local artists in both classical and contemporary music, performed and recorded with more than thirty ensembles across genres, and taught and mentored roughly two hundred amateur music students, ages 6-70. She has also assisted several dozen music students as they transitioned from avocational to professional by providing opportunities for and assistance with performances, original music production, collaboration, and engagement with Portland's vibrant art community.
From March 2020, Emily's primary focus has been creating and releasing music with local artists, culminating in the release of three singles and two award-winning music scores. Her latest score, “1955,” will be presented at an Oscar-qualifying film festival this fall. After a hiatus due to the pandemic, Emily is excited to offer lessons again and will cap her roster at sixteen students, ensuring personalized and attentive instruction.
As a dedicated music educator, Emily is passionate about dispelling common myths about singing and promoting accurate information. She believes that attitudes regarding talent can hinder learning and creativity and feed the musical homogeneity of chart-toppers funded and funneled through giants like Warner-Chappell. Emily is committed to debunking myths such as “sing from the diaphragm” and educating students on the avoidability of vocal fold surgery. She aims to encourage and assist new music makers, emphasizing that nobody is born singing or writing songs—everyone has a valuable perspective to share.
Emily’s lessons are rooted in vocology, the science and practice of voice habilitation. They include exercises for vocal health, addressing a variety of needs and structured around balancing all three parts of the vocal mechanism: breath, phonation, and resonance. Students will learn how to troubleshoot during practice, becoming their own teachers throughout the week and beyond. Lessons also offer insight into compositional techniques, exploring creativity and encouraging students to use their unique voices.
Embark on your musical journey with a supportive and experienced mentor dedicated to helping you find and develop your own unique voice.
